Too large for standard transport?
A few centimeters too wide. A few tons too heavy. Or simply too tall for a standard container. While boxes, pallets, and many machines can be moved using standardized transport methods, some goods simply don't fit that mold. Large production machinery, plant components, generators, and other industrial equipment present unique challenges for logistics providers.
In these cases, it’s not enough to just order a larger truck. With special transport, the real work often begins long before the cargo even starts moving.
When does a shipment become a special transport?
Whether a load can still be handled with standard solutions depends primarily on four factors:
- Length
- Width
- Height
- Weight
Added to this are the shape, center of gravity, contact surface, and the question of how the cargo can be lifted and secured in the first place.
Even a few centimeters can make a difference. On German roads, the generally permitted vehicle width is 2.55 meters. If vehicles or vehicle combinations exceed the generally permitted dimensions, axle loads, or total weights, special permits may be required.
But road transport is only one part of the planning process. If the cargo is to be transported further by ship, it must also be determined which equipment is suitable for that leg of the journey.
It starts with precise measurements
For standard freight, dimensions and weight are important. For special freight, they are critical. Before a transport can be planned, the actual dimensions and weight of the cargo must be known as precisely as possible.
It’s not just about length, width, and height. These questions also play a role:
Where is the center of gravity?
A heavy machine with an unevenly distributed weight places different demands on the vehicle and load securing than a uniformly loaded component.
Where can the cargo be lifted?
Not every machine part can simply be moved with a forklift. Under certain circumstances, cranes or special lifting devices are required.
Which points can be used for securing?
The cargo must be secured against sliding or tipping throughout the entire journey.
When shipping out-of-gauge cargo by sea, accurate dimensions are critical. Even the securing materials used can be relevant when determining the external dimensions. Incorrect information can lead to cargo being reclassified or failing to be loaded as planned.
The route must suit the cargo
For standard truck transport, the exact route often plays only a minor role for the shipper. For oversized or heavy-haul transport, however, it can become a central component of the planning process.
Because there may be obstacles along the way:
- low bridges
- limited bridge load capacities
- tight curves and roundabouts
- roadworks
- narrow lanes
- low overhead lines or other height restrictions
- access points with insufficient maneuvering space
The shortest route is therefore not necessarily the most suitable one.
Depending on the transport, the route, vehicle combination, and permissible loads must be coordinated in advance. For particularly demanding shipments, this may mean choosing a longer route because the direct path is not suitable for the dimensions or weight involved.
When a permit is required
If a vehicle or combination exceeds generally permissible limits due to its dimensions, axle loads, or total mass, transport in Germany generally requires a permit under Section 29 (3) of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO). Depending on the specific circumstances, additional exemptions may also be necessary.
This turns transport planning into an administrative project as well.
Depending on the transport, requirements may arise regarding:
- specific route
- travel times
- escort measures
- permitted speed
- additional requirements for specific route sections
For this reason, permit planning for exceptional cargo should not begin just before the desired departure date.
Which truck transports such goods?
The same applies to the vehicle: there is no single solution for every special cargo. Depending on dimensions and weight, specialized low-bed or drop-deck trailers, as well as other heavy-duty vehicles, may be used.
The lowest possible loading height can be crucial, especially for tall cargo. After all, what matters in the end is the total height of the vehicle and its load.
For particularly heavy goods, the distribution of the load across individual axles plays an important role. More axles can help distribute the weight accordingly—provided that the vehicle, route, and permit are all suited to the specific transport.
And what happens at the port?
The challenge does not end upon arrival at the port. If the cargo does not fit into a standard closed container, various solutions are available for sea transport.
Open Top Container
Open top containers do not have a fixed, closed roof like standard containers. They are suitable for cargo that, due to its height or the need for top-loading, cannot be easily loaded through standard container doors.
The opening can be used for top-loading and subsequently protected with a tarpaulin. The specific dimensions and permitted weights vary depending on the equipment.
Flat Rack
For particularly wide, tall, or heavy cargo, a flat rack may be used.
It has no side walls and no closed roof. Its reinforced floor construction is specifically designed for heavy and exceptionally dimensioned loads. Hapag-Lloyd, for example, points out that flat racks can accommodate higher and more concentrated loads than standard equipment—though the actual load capacity also depends on how the cargo is distributed on the flat rack.
If the cargo exceeds standard dimensions, it is referred to as Out-of-Gauge, or OOG.
This affects not only loading but also onboard planning: for example, oversized or overheight cargo can take up adjacent storage space. Different requirements and calculations therefore apply to such shipments compared to standard containers. Shipping lines consequently treat out-of-gauge cargo as special cargo.
Breakbulk
Not all cargo needs to be transported using container equipment at all.
For very large or heavy components, conventional loading as breakbulk may be an option. In this case, the goods are transported as a single cargo unit and are lifted, stowed, and secured accordingly.
Which option is suitable always depends on the specific transport.
The crane becomes part of the transport chain
With particularly large machines, a very practical question also arises:
How does the cargo get onto the vehicle in the first place – and back off again later?
A standard forklift is often insufficient for large or heavy components. In such cases, mobile cranes or other lifting systems may be necessary. During the planning phase, factors such as weight, lifting points, center of gravity, required reach, and on-site space constraints must be taken into account.
This applies to both the point of origin and the destination. A special transport is only complete once the cargo has arrived where it is actually needed – and can be safely unloaded there.
Many parties, one transport
The more unusual the cargo, the more parties often need to work together.
These can include:
- Shippers and consignees
- Freight forwarders
- Heavy-lift companies
- Crane companies
- Authorities
- Port and terminal operators
- Shipping lines
- additional service providers along the route
A change in one area can have an impact on the entire process. For example, if a machine is loaded just a few centimeters higher than originally specified, it may not only affect the vehicle being used. The planned route, the permits, or the equipment for sea transport may also need to be reassessed.
That is precisely why early and highly precise planning is crucial for special transport.
When it comes to special transport, every centimeter and kilogram can determine the entire logistics solution. Dimensions, weight, center of gravity, route, permits, vehicle selection, port handling, and sea freight must therefore be considered as a single, integrated process from the very beginning. The more extraordinary the cargo, the more critical early planning of the entire transport chain becomes.
