Where is my container, anyway? How container tracking works
Once a container is in transit, many companies face the same question: where is our cargo right now? For parcel shipments, real-time tracking has long been standard. Today, international container shipments can also be tracked digitally, though the process works a bit differently than with standard parcel shipping.
Standard container tracking primarily displays individual status events along the transport chain. Continuous live GPS tracking is not automatically included with a standard shipping container. In this article, we explain how container tracking works, what information is available, and why estimated arrival times may change during the journey.
The container number as a unique identifier
Every freight container used in international transport has a standardized identification number. It remains assigned to the container, allowing it to be uniquely identified in documents, booking systems, and at the various stages of the transport chain.
A container number consists of:
- three letters as the owner or operator code,
- one letter as the equipment category identifier,
- six digits as the serial number,
- a final check digit.
An example is: BICU 123456 5
Depending on the shipping line or tracking system, a shipment can also be searched for using the booking number or the bill of lading number.
How does container tracking work?
During a container shipment, status updates are generated at various points. Depending on the transport segment, these come from sources such as shipping lines, terminals, or other service providers involved.
Typical events include:
- Collection or provision of the container,
- Arrival at the export terminal,
- Loading onto the vessel,
- Departure of the vessel,
- Unloading at a transshipment port,
- Transshipment to a connecting vessel,
- Arrival at the port of destination,
- Discharge from the vessel,
- Available for pickup,
- Return of the empty container.
Which notifications are actually displayed depends on the specific provider and the transport route. Not every system provides the same information. In addition, status updates may be transmitted or updated with a delay.
Is container tracking live location tracking?
Standard container tracking is usually not continuous real-time tracking.
Instead, it documents when a container reaches specific stations or has passed through defined events. There can therefore be a significant time gap between two status updates.
For specially equipped containers, additional telematics data may be available. Depending on the technology, this includes, for example:
- Location information,
- Temperature readings,
- Humidity,
- Shocks,
- Door openings.
However, such features are not included as standard for every container or every transport.
What does ETA mean?
One of the most important pieces of information in container tracking is the ETA. The abbreviation stands for: Estimated Time of Arrival
This refers to the estimated time of arrival for a vessel or shipment at a specified port or destination. However, the ETA is a forecast, not a binding guarantee. It is updated throughout the journey as new information becomes available. It is also important to note that the arrival of the vessel does not automatically mean the container is ready for pickup.
After the vessel docks, further steps may be required, such as:
- Assignment of a berth,
- Unloading of the vessel,
- Terminal processing,
- Customs clearance, if applicable,
- Container availability,
- Release by the shipping line.
Therefore, there may be additional time between the vessel's ETA and when the container is actually ready for pickup.
Why can the ETA change?
A container ship often calls at several ports during a single voyage. Delays at one stop can therefore affect the rest of the schedule. Possible reasons for a change in ETA include:
Weather conditions
Storms, heavy seas, or extreme weather conditions can force a ship to reduce speed, arrive at a port later than planned, or adjust its route.
Port congestion
If terminals are operating at high capacity, a ship may have to wait for an available berth. This can also delay the unloading and availability of containers.
Delays from previous port calls
If a ship arrives late from a previous port, this often has a knock-on effect on the subsequent stops of the voyage.
Transshipment
Not every container is transported directly to the destination port on a single ship. With transshipment, the container is unloaded at an intermediate port and transferred to another vessel.
If the first vessel is delayed or the scheduled connection is changed, the onward journey may be postponed accordingly.
Changes to port rotation
Shipping lines may adjust schedules, port sequences, or port calls for operational reasons. In some cases, a port may be called at a later time or omitted entirely.
Technical or operational disruptions
Technical issues with vessels, cranes, or terminal facilities can also impact the transport process.
Why does tracking sometimes show no new status for a long time?
If a new update is missing for several days, it does not automatically mean that the container is stationary or has been lost. During a long sea voyage, there may simply be no new reportable event. The last status remains in place until the next stage of the transport chain is reached. It is also possible that a new update may appear in the tracking system with a delay.
Therefore, an individual status update should always be viewed in the context of the planned transport route, the schedule, and previous events.
Interpreting tracking data correctly
Tracking systems create transparency, but they must be interpreted correctly.
A status update alone does not always answer every question. Key factors include:
- How up-to-date is the information?
- Does the ETA refer to the vessel or the entire shipment?
- Is there a transshipment port?
- Has a connection already been confirmed?
- Has the container just arrived, or is it already available?
- Are clearances or further steps still required?
Especially for time-critical deliveries, it is not enough to simply look at a position or status display.
