Full container (FCL) vs. Less Than Container Load (LCL): When which makes sense for your Chinese import

Full container (FCL) vs. consolidated container (LCL)

FCL (Full Container Load) means: Your goods travel exclusively in their own container. LCL (Less than Container Load) means: Your shipment shares a container with goods from other senders. Which option is right for your Chinese import depends on volume, schedule, type of goods and predictability. General recommendations won't help here. The decision belongs in the hands of an experienced freight forwarder.

Anyone who regularly imports from China will ask themselves this question sooner or later: Book full containers or use consolidated containers? Both options are valid. The wrong choice unnecessarily costs time, money, or both. This article explains how FCL and LCL differ, which factors influence the decision and what importers should pay particular attention to in practice.

What is FCL and when is it the right choice?

FCL stands for full container load. You book an entire container that is loaded exclusively with your goods. No one else is sharing this container. This means: no dependence on other shipments, no repackaging and no increased risk of damage from foreign goods.

FCL is particularly suitable if your shipment is large enough to utilize a container economically, if your goods are sensitive or valuable and should have no contact with foreign goods, or if you need a reliable and predictable transit time. With Full container shipments from China to Germany The container is transported directly from the Chinese port of departure to the destination, with no intermediate stop for consolidation.

Container types available at FCL:

  • 20-foot container (20'DC): suitable for heavy, compact goods with a high weight-to-volume ratio
  • 40 foot container (40'DC): Standard for large volumes of shipments
  • 40-foot high cube (40'HC): more height, ideal for light and bulky goods
  • Refrigerated container (reefer): for temperature-critical goods such as food or pharmaceuticals
  • Flat rack and open top: for oversized or oversized goods that do not fit into standard containers

What is LCL and when is it an option?

LCL stands for Less than Container Load, in German collective container or general cargo by sea. Your goods are consolidated in a container together with shipments from other senders. You only pay for the space you actually use, which is usually billed in cubic meters.

LCL can be a useful option if your shipment is too small to fill a full container economically, or if you want to ship smaller quantities of goods regularly and flexibly. Important to understand: LCL is not an easier path, but a different process with its own requirements and runtimes.

In China, the goods must first be combined with other shipments in the consolidation warehouse. After arrival in Hamburg, the collection container is separated again at the deconsolidation warehouse. These two steps extend the total running time by several days compared to FCL.

Which option suits which situation?

There is no universal answer to the FCL-LCL question. The right decision depends on several factors, which rarely all point in the same direction in practice. The following overview provides an initial orientation:

Situation Recommendation
Shipment volume largely fills an entire container FCL
Small or medium shipment volumes that do not fill a container Consider LCL
Time sensitive shipment with tight delivery deadlines FCL
Sensitive, valuable, or easily damaged goods FCL
Dangerous goods or cargo with special storage requirements FCL
Flexible planning without a fixed delivery schedule LCL possible
Temperature controlled or refrigerated cargo FCL (Reefer)
Initial sample shipment for supplier verification LCL possible

Important: This table provides an initial orientation. The actual more economical option always depends on the current market situation, the specific volume and weight of your goods, and routing. FR8 Logistik GmbH checks both for you and recommends the solution that suits your shipment

What is often overlooked in practice

Many importers look at the decision between FCL and LCL purely from a cost perspective. That falls short. There are other aspects that can shift the overall balance sheet.

With LCL, you not only share container space, but also the risk of delays. If another shipment in the same container has a document problem, or customs checks one of the accompanying senders, it could stop your entire shipment. At FCL, only your own documents and customs processes determine the process.

In addition, there is the question of Customs clearance in Hamburg. Customs clearance can be requested from FCL immediately upon arrival of the ship. With LCL, the collection container must first be opened in the deconsolidation warehouse and your shipment separated before the customs process begins. This costs time, which can be missing in a tight supply chain.

After all, packaging plays a role. LCL shipments are handled several times during the transport process. Goods must therefore be packaged in a more stable and complex manner than with FCL, where the container is locked in China after loading and is only reopened in Hamburg.

Common questions about FCL and LCL when importing to China

What is the difference between FCL and LCL in ocean freight?
FCL (Full Container Load) means that you book an entire container exclusively for your goods. LCL (Less than Container Load) means that your shipment is transported with goods from other senders in a consolidated container. With FCL, you have full control and no dependence on other loads. With LCL, you only pay for the space you use, but have longer terms due to consolidation and deconsolidation.

From what volume is a full container (FCL) from China worthwhile?
There is no flat volume limit. The economic efficiency depends on the current relationship between FCL rate and LCL rate on the route, the weight of the goods and the time schedule. As a rough guideline, FCL is often the more economical choice for a load volume of around 15 cubic meters. Specific advice from your shipping company is essential.

Is FCL or LCL faster when importing from China?
FCL is generally faster. A full container is transported directly from the port of departure in China to Hamburg, without stops for consolidation or deconsolidation. At LCL, this process typically extends the total duration by several days.

What container sizes does the FCL have from China?
The FCL offers 20-foot standard containers (20'DC), 40-foot standard containers (40'DC), 40-foot high-cube (40'HC) and special containers such as refrigerated containers (reefers) for temperature-sensitive goods or flat racks for oversized loads.

Can I also ship smaller quantities with FCL?
Yes FCL is not bound to a minimum volume. You can also ship small quantities in a full container if it makes sense for other reasons, such as sensitive goods or when you need a guaranteed transit time. The profitability must then be checked individually.
